Credit Transfer Details
American University of Yangon Transfer Program
International Studies Program is designed to assist students abroad in preparing for and transferring to select American universities, with accumulated transfer credit in lower-division (first two years) General Education (GE) requirements and other coursework, which is either counted as ELECTIVE credit or towards the MAJOR requirement of the individual student.
The program also includes additional course work designed to help English as a Second Language (ESL) students prepare for success in the western academic environment, such as classes in Critical Thinking skills, Note-taking skills, and TOEFL preparation. ESL courses do not count for transfer credit in the U.S. system.
The U.S. four-year (Bachelor’s degree) programs generally require the accumulation of 120 credits to meet graduation requirements. Generally this is divided into about 50 credits in GE subjects, and the remainder of 70 credits in MAJOR requirements and ELECTIVES – the balance between MAJOR and ELECTIVES varies according to the MAJOR selected by the student at transfer. Students may earn up to 70 credits of the 120 required to meet Bachelor’s degree (4-year university) requirements, in the two-year (5-term) program in Myanmar. Students will then transfer to one of the four-year partner universities with which we have an Articulation Agreement.
Students are required to have a cumulative GPA of 2.4 or higher in Terms 1 to 5 of the Program in order to be able to transfer credits to the US colleges. Students must also maintain Grade “C” or above in Math, English Composition, Critical Thinking, and Communication course work. Upon meeting Bachelor’s degree requirements, students may then take part in an Optional Practical Training (OPT) program for an additional year(s), may move on to graduate programs (if qualified), or will return to Myanmar for employment.
